Transition Town Tramore Presents
Permaculture & the Kitchen Garden; a talk by Graham Strouts

In the third of a series of events to raise awareness about the issues of Peak Oil and Climate Change, the Tramore Transition Town Initiative has invited well known Permaculturalist, Mr. Graham Strouts, to give a talk on the benefits of using permaculture principles when designing a kitchen garden at the Tramore Community Care Centre, Pond Road, Tramore on Friday November 21st at 8pm.
Kitchen Gardens, where householders grow small amounts of fruit and vegetables in their back gardens, are becoming more and more popular. It is reported that in the UK vegetable seeds are now outselling flower seeds by nearly three to one, compared to three years ago when flower seeds were selling two to one to vegetable seeds.
“There is a growing interest in ‘growing your own’” says Sally Sweeney of Transition Town Tramore. “We can see the huge demand for Allotment Projects up and down the Country, and the success of groups like the Waterford Food Producers Network clearly shows the demand is out there.”
In this talk, Graham Strouts from Kinsale Community College explains how Permaculture principles can be used to create a low maintenance kitchen garden using trees, bushes, climbers and groundcover plants – some familiar & some surprises!
Graham’s presentation will be of interest to experienced gardeners and novices alike and will cover the general principles of Permaculture; give tips and tricks on grouping “guilds” of plants to improve production and reduce pests; and provide contact information for nurseries specialising in fruit and vegetables that are best suited to the Irish climate.
The talk will be followed by a short discussion to identify the level of interest in setting up a Community Gardens/Allotment Project in Tramore.
