Skilling Up for Power Down: ¬ Supporting the Transition to Resilient Communities
Almost every time we switch on a TV or open a newspaper these days, we see or hear something about the negative impacts of climate change or the high price of fossil energy. So how should we respond to these issues?
Recently the ‘Transition Towns process’ has emerged with the aim of radically reducing carbon emissions while at the same time building local resilience within communities.
Tramore’s Transition Town Initiative is one of 800 Transition Communities worldwide – Villages, Towns, Cities and Islands – which are looking forward to the future, asking the question “how can our community respond to the challenges of Peak Oil and Climate Change?”, and putting together plans to enable them to prosper and thrive in an era when the impacts of Climate Change and Peak Oil force major changes on the way we live our lives.
In the first of a series of awareness raising events to be run through Autumn and Winter 2007, Transition Town Tramore is hosting an introduction to the Transition Town process entitled “Skilling Up for Power Down : ¬Supporting the Transition to Resilient Communities” at The Grand Hotel Tramore on Thursday 11th September at 8.00pm.
In this up-beat and positive presentation Davie Philip, education manager with the Cultivate Living and Learning Centre in Dublin, and the co-ordinator of the Transition Network in Ireland, will explore the context and principles of “Transition” and introduce a number of creative community initiatives from around the country.
This presentation will use film and animation, followed by a scenario planning exercise that will engage participants in visioning a future for Tramore that works.
Future Transition Town Events in Tramore will include the showing of the Films “The Power of Community” and “The End of Suburbia”, talks on Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, and advice & tips on developing a Kitchen Garden. Details of these events will be confirmed in the near future.
